8x POSP on Chinese NDM-86

POSP 8x42A scope made in Belarus. The magnification is 8 power, meaning what you can see at 100 yards with the naked eye will look the same at 800 yards through the scope. The 42mm objective bell allows significantly more light into the scope over the standard 24mm objective in the PSO-1 scope, which allows it to be used in darker light conditions.

This scope is much larger than the standard PSO-1 which is about 3 inches shorter in length. All the markings are in Russian, as well as the instruction manual. The finish is a flat black scratch-resistant coating which seems very durable.

Having that 8x magnification instead of 4 was really nice for 200 yard target shooting. With the elevation turret at "1" I was right on at 100 yards. When I moved to the 200 yard range I simply turned the elevation turret to "2" and was right on target at 200 yards. That is except for the windage. Since the scope is not centered over the rifle's bore, I had to move the windage drum one click down to compensate. The scope appears to be calibrated for the 168 grain HPBT bullets I was firing because the 146 grain FMJ NATO rounds I was firing were hitting too high at 200 yards.

It came with a nice thinly padded black vinyl soft case and a rubber eye piece. It also has front and rear rubber lens covers. No spare parts though. Instruction manual was in Russian.

Russian 1.5 volt LED which screws into the bottom of the scope body. It glows bright red to light the reticle and an AA battery adapter but no infrared device (of course).

The reticle is much larger in the scope (than in the 4x PSO-1) to compensate for the higher magnification.

If you are used to the PSO scope that came on your Chinese NDM-86, you will notice right away how much easier the POSP reticle is to see both lit and unlit.

Turning the adjustment knobs makes the reticle move instead of the image so if your rifle's rail is not perfectly aligned, you'll likely have an off-centered reticle.

This reticle differs from the military version in that it is calibrated for two targets. One range scale is set for a target 1.5 meters tall (about the size of an elk) and can be used out to 1000 yards. The smaller scale is set for a half meter tall target (about the size of a small deer) and can be used out to 600 yards.
